Playful creativity is key to Hoshino Resort Risonare Osaka, which houses Japan’s largest children’s atelier to adopt the Reggio Emilia approach of experiential learning. A winding white line that begins on the floor of the reception area leads visitors into the atelier, guiding them past a raised gallery space and around islands of rounded tables, stools and activity areas. Within this indoor landscape, wood-toned interiors are matched with accents of pop colours that echo the hues of the port’s boats, shipping containers and cranes. Hugging the atelier’s inner walls of shelves, tiers of pallets form multilevel play spaces and visual layers of pinks, blues, oranges and yellow. The shelves themselves are kept geometrically simple to highlight a bounty of art and craft materials — collections of leaves, shells, colour co-ordinated plastics, metals, spools of yarn, picture books and menageries of animal and insect models. Every piece of furniture in the atelier inspires creativity. Moveable cubicles house a recording space and photo booth. Lightbox tables cast shadows of objects across the ceiling, transparent tables display local artifacts, and huge circular hoops suspended from above can be used to hang textiles and artworks. Throughout, the colours of SMBC and Starbucks — a palette of greens, gold and rich woods — pay homage to the traditional hues of historical banks. ATM booths are tucked away at the back alongside an SMBC consulting area that doubles as extra cafe seating until 4pm, when a metal fabric curtain encloses the area for bank transactions. The contour of curved bench seating outlines a casual -meeting area, also available for cafe customer use, for bank staff to offer talks and other events. Beside the staircase, a glass elevator draws attention to and encourages visitors to explore the second-floor Share Lounge's work booths, study tables and window seating overlooking the city. A lowered wood ceiling provides intimacy in a corner section designed to double as an event space. For ultimate focus, an original SMBC bank vault is repurposed into a work booth room, its chunky steel door and bar locks, becoming a whimsical design focus. Official SMBC banking meetings take place in the basement of Olive LOUNGE Shibuya. Here, Klein Dytham’s doradora modular furniture in a luxurious, forest-green velvet, forms a circular meeting spot to welcome guests ahead of private rooms wrapped in frosted glass. Instantly recognizable from afar, its glass facade features a huge 3-dimensional graphic interpretation of KEF’s signature Uni-Q driver array. The iconic design transforms the building into a giant, illuminated, transparent speaker. Like a beacon, it draws visitors into two floors of experiential showrooms and three split-floor levels of sound rooms. More than a showroom or store, its spaces are multifaceted, designed to be lively hubs of creative social activity. Visitors are encouraged to try innovative speaker and headphone designs and experience the sound quality of KEF’s architectural loudspeakers. Collaborators — local artists, designers, musicians and sound producers — are invited to utilize KEF equipment to showcase works. Both the ground-floor Gallery and first-floor Studio feature sound absorption walls fitted with adjustable floating shelves to allow for flexible and ever-changing displays of KEF’s wireless active speakers. Full-height glazed windows are also fitted with moveable LED monitors to showcase digital installations, videos and original collaborative works. A stair tower of shelving for KEF’s greatest and latest products extends through the floors to become the heart of the structure — a center piece that guides visitors from the Gallery and Studio to three split-floor rooms of immersive sound experiences. On the lower-ground level, the Ultimate Experience Room interior is fine-tuned by sound engineers to create the optimum soundscape for Ross Lovegrove’s first design for KEF — a pair of futuristic, 2-meter-tall MUON speakers. Above, The Wireless High-Fidelity Lounge, a comfy living room space, demonstrates the sound quality and range of KEF’s LS60 wireless speakers. The uppermost level, The Extreme Theatre, provides an intimate home cinema experience of ultimate surround sound, featuring eight sets of reference speakers installed in walls, behind the screen and in the ceiling. In a district defined by strict geometry and vertical rhythm, the new frontage introduces a gentle sculptural calm, expressed through soft, sweeping curves that seem to breathe with the light. Rather than follow the linearity of Ginza’s cityscape, the elevation is wrapped in bespoke cast-aluminium panels whose elegant triple-curved forms recall the drape of a wedding dress or the fluid folds of silk. These layered surfaces create the impression of translucent ribbons cascading across the building, adding depth and subtly preparing visitors for the refined world that awaits inside. The facade is composed of three stepped layers: cast aluminium panels, flat aluminium panels, and a glass layer printed with a ceramic pattern. This combination was developed through extensive prototyping to achieve both precise geometry and a finish that meets Cartier’s exacting standards. The sculptural quality of the composition is anchored by a rectangular frame that defines the outer boundary of the facade, giving the building a strong presence within its busy urban context. A defining feature of the design is the decision to allow the curves to flow horizontally across the elevation. This creates a striking visual dialogue with the existing building’s vertically aligned aluminium louvres, which continue to veil much of the structure behind. The vertical rhythm of the louvres accentuates the soft horizontal sweep of the new cladding, resulting in a dynamic interplay of movement, direction, and light. The gentle curvature also helps dissolve the fire-compartment lines between floors, producing a seamless and unified elevation. The geometric pattern embedded within the facade draws on Seigaiha, a traditional Japanese motif historically used in garments and decorative arts. While the pattern did not originally symbolize water, it has come to evoke gentle waves and expansive horizons—an auspicious expression of harmony and continuity. Cartier reinterprets this heritage motif with contemporary craftsmanship, grounding the building in its cultural setting while elevating it through the maison’s refined material language. Central to the design is Cartier’s bespoke “Moon Gold” finish: a delicate, pale gold tone with a subtle white tint. Achieving its nuanced appearance required multiple rounds of surface testing and calibration. The resulting finish shifts gently with Tokyo’s changing light—cooler and more silvery in the morning, warmer and more luminous at dusk—imbuing the facade with a quiet, poetic animation throughout the day. Following KDa’s Cartier Shinsaibashi Boutique, the Ginza 4-chome facade furthers the collaboration between the Maison and the Tokyo-based practice known for blending tradition with innovation. Following the 2024 earthquake, KDa helped coordinate five post-disaster community shelters and designed the first in Noroshimachi — a warm, welcoming space for people to reconnect, share meals, and rebuild lives together. Located beside a cluster of rather soulless, prefabricated temporary housing units, the Home for All offers a contrasting sense of care, humanity, and belonging. The design draws from local traditions, using reclaimed kawara roof tiles and timber to create a tactile, familiar environment rooted in the region’s culture. Over 21 tons of kawara tiles were rescued from damaged homes and reused, preserving cultural memory while reducing waste. Built through inclusive collaboration with local residents, volunteers, and craftspeople, the project exemplifies architecture’s social purpose: to restore not just buildings, but community spirit. Inside the communal area, rounded furniture echoes the curvilinear shelf wall and encourages face-to-face communication. Modular dora dora seating, KDa’s collaboration with Karimoku, winds its way around a green circular rug and hugs side tables. Elsewhere, a corner coffee bar serves as another casual meeting point, and numerous potted plants, cared for by employees, bring the therapeutic benefits of nature into the space. Situated within a deep alcove of the curving shelf wall is a more private meeting room that can be closed off with floor-to-ceiling glass doors.
